Five Spectacular Beaches

Eastern Malibu CA is home to some of the most spectacular beaches and scenic vistas in Los Angeles County. Whether you’re looking for a day of sunbathing, swimming, or scuba diving, there is something for everyone in this area.

Point Dume State Beach and Preserve

The northwest tip of Santa Monica Bay, Point Dume features a dome-shaped promontory surrounded by picturesque white sand beaches and sparking blue water. The headland is protected by Point Dume Natural Preserve and has a variety of trails on its bluffs to enjoy.

From atop the cliffs you can enjoy sweeping views of Malibu, the Santa Monica Mountains, and Catalina Island. On clear days you can also glimpse a portion of the Channel Islands and watch for whales migrating seasonally from December to April.

El Matador State Beach

Less than five miles south of Leo Carrillo State Beach, El Matador is a popular spot for a day at the beach. The sandy expanse is dotted with massive boulders in the surf that invite all sorts of exploration. Rock climbers can top rope off the slab wall or try their skills on the rocky sea stacks.

Pirates Cove

In the early 1900s, this tiny pocket beach was used by smugglers who sought to transport rum and opium. During the late 1800s, this area was also a sea lion rookery. Eventually, the population was decimated by over-hunting and pollution.

Westward Beach

With three miles of sand backed by sea cliffs and decorated with rocks and coves, Westward Beach is one of the most beautiful Malibu beaches. It is operated and maintained by the County of Los Angeles, offering picnic tables, volleyball nets, and a wide array of amenities that make it a great choice for families or groups.

Zuma Beach

Located west of Point Dume, Zuma Beach is a popular Los Angeles County beach and a favorite among locals for its pristine, soft sand. The beach is popular with swimmers and bodysurfers, but you can also find a secluded cove here if you’re looking for some peace and quiet.

Meyer Memorial State Beach

The sand here is less crowded than that of Zuma, but it still sees plenty of visitors on sunny days. This sandy beach has a number of amenities, including restrooms and showers along with food vendors at either end of the sand.

Westward Beach is a great place to go when you want to avoid the crowds of the more popular beaches on Malibu’s west coast. It is a little less crowded than El Matador or Point Dume and offers a nice, relaxing atmosphere.

There are a few small parking lots off the PCH, and it is best to park near the beach and walk back in. Otherwise, parking can be difficult on busy beach days.

A short hike will take you up the bluff to an overlook with a stunning view of Malibu and Santa Monica Bay. You can also access a trail to an isolated beach at Dume Cove, which has tide pools and is known for its shellfish and other marine life.
